The Box Hill story ended (for 15 years, at least) where it began, on the playing fields of Braeburn. Steve Hopkins had been recruited as a possible long-term replacement for Chris Hooper, who was due to go to college in the autumn, and whose availability anyway had become rather sporadic. Steve was supposed to play for the 'B' team, but on the day insisted on playing for the 'A' team, "So I can go home early". Now there's confidence for you.

Both teams were drawn way out of their depth, as ever, and both went out quietly at the first time of asking, and nobody seemed surprised or disappointed. Les Bailey and I hung around afterwards, to see our old friends News Avengers get to the final, where they lost (on corners, if memory serves) to some team from Eastfield.

Then we went home, and put away the tangerine shirts for the last time.
